Legends of old Poznan

There are several legends about the beginning of the name "Poznan". The first one - quoted the most often, says that it was on the Cybina River where the forefathers of Slavic tribes - Lech, Czech and Rus - met after three years. When they were approaching the river from different sides, they exclaimed: "I recognize!" (Pol. "Poznaję!"). In remembrance of this meeting they decided to establish a fortified stronghold on the river and call it "Poznan". Another legend states that the residents of this very stronghold were the first to learn the Christian faith. As the closest to the truth, the historians recognize the origin of the name coming from the founder of the city, whose name was "Posthumus," which means late.
