Betonhaus and Perfumiarnia -- a new quality development in the heart of Łazarz

The renovated Betonhaus has come back to life in style. The richly decorated ceilings of the early 20th-century pavilion are now admired by visitors to the Petit Paris restaurant; the wings house a wine bar and a pizzeria. The building is part of Perfumiarnia, a project to revitalise the quarter of streets between Głogowska, Śniadeckich and Wilson Park.

The first Perfumiarnia houses stood in 2023 on the plot next to the Betonhaus. The reinforced concrete pavilion, built in 1911 in Wilson Park for an exhibition of emperor Wilhelm II's hunting trophies, became the home of sports colleges after the first war. The last of these, the Poznań University of Physical Education, brought it to ruin and put it up for sale.

Garvest, a fund planning to build a housing estate right next door, has included Betonhaus in the project. And there is also a former brewery connected to Betonhaus via a link and another Perfumiarnia building under construction, filling in the street frontage on Śniadeckich Street. The quarter will be closed by a hotel from Głogowska Street. The investor promises that the courtyard between the buildings will be filled with more lush greenery than in Wilson Park. One has to admit that the plants around the houses are already impressive.

Deputy Mayor Jędrzej Solarski, who was present at the official opening of Betonhaus, was pleased to see the monument being restored to the residents and said that the park surrounding it had the potential to become a more welcoming space. Even in winter, the park's alleys see many more people passing by, some of them heading for the Betonhaus restaurant, which can be entered directly from the park, others just dropping in for a coffee to contemplate the greenery of Poznań's oldest municipal park from the patio.

- The restaurants in Betonhaus and the wellness zone in the basement of Nowy Browar are adding life to the area - according to Garvest partner Michal Wlodarczyk. - And the park, which is going from being a somewhat forgotten place to becoming a popular park again.

Betonhaus attracts crowds, not only with good food but also with concerts, lectures and meetings. They take place in the Chmielna hall in the former brewery, the Lux Korona lodge in the Betonhaus, which is said to have been used by Emperor Wilhelm II, and on the connecting Lustrzany square.

The residents who move into Perfumiarnia_2 in the autumn will probably be the next guests of the Betonhaus units. The JEMS Architekci studio is responsible for designing the building on Śniadeckich Street, as in the first phase. This time they have designed it in the style of a modern townhouse. Shops and services will occupy the ground floor, while the basement will house a car park for residents and visitors to the Perfumiarnia.

It is hard not to rejoice that another part of Łazarz is coming back to life. A private investment, supported by the city and the conservation officer, has transformed beyond recognition a neglected quarter in the city centre and the historic Betonhaus and the former New Poznań Brewery. History has come full circle; the bustle of a hundred years ago has returned. This is an impulse to also restore the park to its glory days, when it was a popular meeting place for Poznań residents.
