Kharkiv (Ukraine) is a city in the North-East section of the Ukraine, at the meeting point of two rivers - Kharkiv and Lopan, located near the biggest industrial centres in the Ukraine and Russia. The city was first mentioned in a document of 1655. In 1765, by the edict of Catherine the II, the city became the centre of the Slobidska Ukraine province. From 1917-1934 it was the capital of the socialist Ukraine. Since 1991 it is the capital city of the independent Ukraine and one of its major industrial, trade, scientific and cultural centres. It constitutes an important communication hub. The chemical and pharmaceutical industries are developing here nicely. Kharkiv is also the home of the biggest regional centre of the Ukrainian Academy of Science.
