Brno (Czech Republic) is located 428 kilometres to the south of Poznań and is the second in size city of the Czech Republic, an important administrative centre of the country and the capital city of Moravia. Just as Poznań, Brno is a major academic and fair centre. The local university was founded on 28 January 1919 on the basis of the earlier Jesuit academy, and the history of Brno Fair goes back to 26 May 1928, when the first international fair was organised, under the name "Modern Culture of Czechoslovakia". Ever since that time the fairs has been organized regularly, becoming a showpiece of Brno. The architecture of the city is its great asset. Thepilberk castle from the 13th century and the St. Paul and Peter Cathedral from the 12th century overlook the city. Many medieval market yards are today's independent culture centres.
