City Council
In 1990, the ongoing social change combined with the political change initiated in Poland in the 1980s opened a new chapter in local self-government organizations' history. The Act of 8 March 1990 on Local Self-Government (as of 1998 referred to as the Act on Commune Self-Government) abolished the system of national councils as uniform bodies of state authority that had been in force for 40 years. Administrative dualism assuming the division into government administration and local administration was restored.
A municipality became the primary public administration unit with competencies regarding its inhabitants' affairs defined by law. Local self-governments gained authority over their territories, financial resources, and the capacity to meet its inhabitants' needs.
In the City of Poznan, the decision-making and controlling body is the Poznan City Council. The Council represents its city's residents as it is elected by and from among residents - which is the essence of self-government.
The Council's main task is to determine city development policy and, through adopting the City's budget, to set current implementation priorities in the City's operations.
The term of office of the Council is five years. The councilors of the current 8th term were elected to serve from 2018 to 2023.
Poznan City Councilors are active in standing and ad hoc committees of the Poznan City Council. The standing committees are as follows:
