Located to the north of the Old Town, the Winiary Fort is one of the greatest attractions in the city. During the first half of the 19th Century, the Prussians constructed a mighty fortress here, which was destroyed in 1945. Today, the terrain of the former fort is a park, which covers an approximate area of 100 ha, and is home to the original sculptures of Magdalena Abakanowicz. The south east slope of the hill is occupied by the cemeteries of those who died during the First and Second World Wars. The ruins of the fortress host the Armoury Museum and the Museum of the "Poznań" Army. But the Citadel is not only ideal for fans of the military! It is here that tourists searching for peace and quiet will find perfect conditions to relax!
The Citadel is also one of the largest military cemeteries in Wielkopolska. The south west part of the park contains the graves of Red Army soldiers. This is also the location of the garrison cemetery with the graves of insurgents from the January Uprising and soldiers who died in the war in 1920, the cemetery of Polish heroes and the military cemetery of the British Commonwealth, which is home to the remains of several dozen participants in the famous escape of alliance soldiers from the Żagań prisoner-of-war camp, on which the famous movie with Steve McQueen, "The Great Escape", was based.
