Poznań is an important centre of science and research in Poland. Research is conducted not only by universities but also by 20 research and development organizations and 18 institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
Poznań scientists' spectacular achievements, such as an effective method of treatment of a type of malignant brain tumour, a method of heart tissue regeneration, a famous VLSI digital circuits testing technology, or an original scalable video codec, are valued in Poland as well as abroad.
Owing to the joint work of the whole scientific community, multidisciplinary centres for advanced research and experimental work in the fields of exact sciences, natural sciences and technology are being established. The leading areas are: communication and information technology, nanotechnology, medicine, biotechnology, and bioengineering. The innovative and modern Wielkopolska Centre of Advanced Technologies, opened in 2013, is one of the effects of this co-operation.
Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Centre is Poland's main scientific Internet institution; it hosts the first Microsoft Innovation Centre in Poland.
