Profesor Valiant jest autorem podwalin teorii obliczeniowej (m.in. twierdzenie Valiant-Vazirani, #P-completeness, model uczenia maszynowego PAC), profesorem Harvard University i laureatem Nagrody Turinga z 2010 r. (tzw. Nobel w informatyce). Ponadto jest laureatem tak prestiżowych nagród jak m.in.: the European Association of Theoretical Computer Science (EATCS) Award (2008 r.), Kuth Prize for outstanding contributions to the foundations of computer science (1997 r.) czy Nevanlinna Prize for outstanding contributions in Mathematical Aspects of Information Sciences (1986 r.).
