Porta Posnania

Description

The Porta Posnania heritage interpretation centre introduces its visitors, literally and symbolically, into the historic space of Cathedral Island.

The history of Poznań's Cathedral Island is essential not only for the city itself, but also, and critically so, for the whole country. The site is closely linked with the origins of the Polish state. It is here that Poland's first historic ruler, Mieszko I, built his biggest stronghold.

Located in the oldest part of city on the Cybina river and in the vicinity of Cathedral Island, Porta Posnania is housed in a specially-designed complex of facilities composed of its main modernist building and a revitalised Cathedral Lock (remnant of Cathedral Island fortifications preserved from the times of the Prussian rule), connected by skywalk that spans across both banks of the river. Cutting through the main building is a distinctive interstice which directs the visitor's gaze to Poland's oldest cathedral.
