David Luft ukończył literaturoznawstwo porównawcze na Wesleyan University (1966) i uzyskał doktorat z historii Europy na Harvard University (1973). Od 1972 do 2008 roku wykładał historię Niemiec, historię intelektualną i nauki humanistyczne na Uniwersytecie Kalifornijskim w San Diego, a od 2008 do 2018 roku obejmował Horning Endowed Chair in the Humanities na Oregon State University. Jego najważniejsze publikacje to Robert Musil and the Crisis of European Culture: 1880-1942 (Berkeley 1980) Eros and Inwardness in Vienna: Weininger, Musil, Doderer (Chicago 2003). Ostatnio ukończył książkę The Austrian Dimension in German Intellectual History: 1740-1938/1939 (London 2021). Opublikował również dwie edycje tłumaczeń: Robert Musil, Precision and Soul: Essays and Addresses, współtłumaczone i zredagowane z Burtonem Pike (University of Chicago Press: Chicago, 1990) oraz Hugo von Hofmannsthal and the Austrian Idea: Selected Essays and Addresses, 1906-1927 (Purdue University Press: West Lafayette, 2011).
