House no. 51

House No. 51Filippo Buonaccorsi is undoubtedly the most famous house owner in the history of Poznań's market square. The eminent Italian humanist, also known as "Callimachus", was tutor and counsellor to King John I Albert and received the house in 1496 as royal payment. Most likely he never laid eyes on it, as he authorised it to be sold just a few weeks later. The previous owners were Italian as well: Paweł and Stefan de Promontorio belonged to the first group of great Italian merchants who settled in Poznań.
The building, embellished with Callimachus's coat of arms and the emblems of Poznań citizens, now houses the Polish Community Association.
The façades of nos. 49, 50 and 51 were reconstructed according to detailed inventory plans made by the eminent German conserver Ferdinand von Quast in 1841.
