House No. 46One of the oldest and most distinguished families in Wielkopolska owned several properties in Poznań. The Poznań castellan, Piotr Czarnkowski, bought House no. 46 in 1557. In the second half of the eighteenth century, the building belonged to Jan Jakub Klug, the richest merchant, banker and industrialist of his time. Klug established the first manufacturing workshops and in 1790 he received noble rank as reward for his contribution to the economic development of the country.
Destroyed by fire in 1945, the house was rebuilt according to the architectural principles prevailing in the second half of the seventeenth century. A plaque by the entrance commemorates Zdzisław Szulc, a merchant and musical instrument collector, who left his collection to the museum. Not many people know that Szulc was an ardent tennis player and the first president of the Polish Lawn Tennis Association, which he established in 1921.
